The Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases (KazRIED) is a leading scientific and clinical ophthalmology center in Kazakhstan, combining eye disease diagnosis and treatment, scientific research, education and modern medical technologies.

About the Clinic

The Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases (KazRIED) is a leading scientific and clinical ophthalmology center in Kazakhstan, combining clinical practice, research, education and modern medical technologies. Founded in 1933, the Institute has been advancing ophthalmology in Kazakhstan for more than 90 years, introducing advanced methods for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, conducting scientific research and training new generations of specialists. Today, KazRIED is an ophthalmology cluster with clinics in Almaty, Astana and Shymkent. The Institute provides a full range of specialized ophthalmic care, from comprehensive diagnostics and conservative treatment to high-tech microsurgery, laser surgery and refractive surgery. The Institute's clinical practice is based on the extensive experience of its scientific school, the expertise of its specialists and world-class equipment. Modern technologies are used to treat cataracts, glaucoma, retinal and vitreous diseases and corneal disorders, as well as to perform various types of laser vision correction. KazRIED actively develops digitalization, international cooperation, educational programs and scientific research. Particular attention is given to improving access to ophthalmic care. In 2026, Kazakhstan's first mobile ophthalmic diagnostic center was established to provide diagnostics and screening in regions across the country. The Institute's strategic direction is to transform KazRIED into a leading ophthalmic technology hub in Central Asia, where the expertise of doctors and scientists is combined with the capabilities of modern technologies, digital systems and artificial intelligence.

Our Mission

To ensure regional leadership by providing benchmark ophthalmic care in which every clinical and management decision is based on data. We create impact at scale: our results are measured by thousands of saved sights and hundreds of implemented technologies. We leave no weak points.

Our Vision

To become the absolute No. 1 Ophthalmic Technology Hub. When people in Central Asia talk about “technology in ophthalmology,” they should mean KazRIED. The Institute should become: - a platform for integrating the best engineering solutions into medicine; - a center that attracts talent and innovation from across the region; - the gold standard that other market participants look to as a benchmark.

Institute History

2026

Implementation began on a new building project featuring a modern pediatric department and operating unit. The project provides new opportunities for diagnostics, treatment and surgical care for children, along with comfortable facilities and a barrier-free environment.

2026

KazRIED established Kazakhstan's first mobile ophthalmic diagnostic center. The project enables modern diagnostics and screening for eye diseases to be carried out directly in regions across the country.

2026

A new five-story medical building for adult patients was commissioned in Almaty, expanding the Institute's clinical and technological capabilities.

2025

The Institute continued to modernize its equipment, expand international cooperation and educational programs, and introduce modern methods for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of eye diseases.

2024

On December 13, the Kazakhstan-German Glaucoma Center was opened as part of the cooperation between KazRIED and the Berlin Institute of Applied Ophthalmology. The project focuses on knowledge exchange, the implementation of modern technologies and the development of joint research.

2024

An additional Institute building was commissioned in Almaty. It expanded the development of ophthalmic diagnostics, consultation and rehabilitation services, refractive and laser surgery, orthokeratology and inpatient care.

2015

On March 12, 2015, the KazRIED branch in Astana began operations. The development of the branch network expanded patients' access to specialized ophthalmic care.

2011

KazRIED was one of the initiators and developers of the methodology for the national glaucoma screening program. Implementation of the program contributed to a significant increase in the detection of the disease at early stages.

1930–2000

The Institute consistently develops specialized ophthalmic care, scientific research and professional training. Key areas of eye microsurgery and the diagnosis and treatment of major ophthalmic diseases are established.

1933

The Kazakh Research Institute of Eye Diseases was established. This marked the beginning of the development of one of Kazakhstan's key scientific and clinical schools of ophthalmology.

If you have any remaining questions

What is laser vision correction?
It is refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea to improve how light is focused on the retina and reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Which refractive errors can be treated with laser vision correction?
Depending on the technique and ocular parameters, laser vision correction may be used for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Eligibility and treatment range are determined after diagnostic assessment.
How do I know if I am suitable for laser vision correction?
Suitability can only be determined after comprehensive diagnostics, including assessment of refraction and its stability, corneal thickness and shape, ocular surface health and other ocular parameters.
At what age can laser vision correction be performed?
Laser vision correction is generally considered in adults once the refractive prescription has become stable. The decision depends on age, refractive stability and examination findings.
Can I have laser vision correction after 40?
Being over 40 does not automatically exclude surgery. Presbyopia, the condition of the natural lens and other age-related ocular changes must be considered because they affect procedure selection and expected outcomes.
